Who Pays For What?

With the average cost of a wedding in excess of £15,000, who pays for what has changed considerably.

Although there are no hard and fast rules, modern weddings tend to be divided equally or be entirely funded by the bride and groom, even though the bride's parents are still acknowledged as the conventional hosts of the wedding.

To save any confusion or embarrassment, it is a good idea to know who's going to pay for what at the wedding, and below is a breakdown of the traditional roles:

Bride's Parents

  • Engagement and wedding announcements
  • Bride's dress
  • Bridesmaids' dresses
  • Wedding stationery
  • Flowers
  • Photography
  • Transport (but not the groom's)
  • Reception
  • Wedding cake

Groom

  • Engagement and wedding rings
  • Church and licence fees
  • Bride's and bridesmaids' bouquets
  • Flowers for both mothers
  • Buttonholes for himself and the best man and ushers
  • Transport for himself and the best man, gifts for bridesmaids and best man
  • Honeymoon

The Bride

  • The groom's wedding ring
  • A wedding gift for the groom
  • Her hair, makeup, beauty treatments
  • Gifts for her attendants
